The truth about knowledge

So, maybe you followed an epistemology course. Maybe they told you about things like ‘propositions’ and ‘justified true belief’ and the ‘Gettier problem.’ Maybe there was something about a guy who looked at a sheep, except it wasn’t a sheep but a rock that looked just like a sheep, but behind the rock a real sheep was hiding… and somehow this was important. You struggle to recall why.

Forget about that. It’s only in the pub that those teachers will tell you the real truth. And so Victor Gijsbers will come and explain to you what the Gettier problem really teaches us — and believe me, it’s something everybody so far failed to see. He’ll talk about dispositions, and having oodles of beliefs, and the gap between propositional knowledge and the real concrete situation that one finds oneself in. He will claim that philosophers have mistaken the abstraction for the reality. And he will, finally, tell you the truth about knowledge.
