Thinking through Food: An Evening of Philosophical Conversation

20th October 2025 at 18:0021:00

The Leiden University MA Asian Studies and Philosophy Programmes are pleased to invite you to an evening of philosophical reflection and conversation concerning ethical, social, and political questions about food. Food is a bedrock necessity of life, but it is also a source of great pleasure and community formation, as well as a site for ethical deliberations. Is eating meat wrong?  What is the role of food in community formation, and how does organizing around food shape ethnic identities? What systems of land ownership and distribution correspond to our ideals of justice? Join LU scholars Yves Menheere, Kebadu Gebremariam, and Jingjing Li to explore these questions and more over a meal prepared by the Hotspot restaurant.

In the past and present, philosophy has taken place through conversations around food. This evening will participate in this tradition of thinking through food: participants will be seated around round tables and will be guided in conversation by LU scholars. Our three guests will deliver brief (10 minute) presentations concerning different aspects of food production, distribution, and consumption, with ample time for questions and discussions.

We invite current as well as prospective students (high school, BA, or Master) to join, along with interested members of the community. As seating is limited, please sign up soon!
